Packing tips when moving to a new home

by | Oct 9, 2019 | Home

Moving to a new house is exciting, but it also involves a lot of work and preparation. There are many things you’ll need to take care of before you get to enjoy your new home. If you plan on hiring a removal company, you should do it quite early to avoid scheduling issues later on. But keep in mind that removals in Hillingdon and international relocations are quite different, so make sure to choose a company that will be able to help in your case.

Get rid of the things you no longer need

Before you start packing your things, take a moment to look around and consider whether you really need all of the things you’ve accumulated over the years. Moving houses creates an opportunity for a new start, so you should use is to throw some of your possessions away instead of taking all the clutter with you. Get rid of everything you don’t use anymore, this way you’ll have to pack less, and avoid making your new place messy from day one.

Be prepared

To make sure everything goes smoothly, you’ll need to get the right supplies beforehand. It’s obvious that boxes in different sizes will be necessary, but that’s no all that will come in handy when you start packing. You’ll need bubble wrap or at least paper, to secure the objects that are more fragile. In order to avoid damages, you can also buy foam and put it in the boxes. And remember about packing tape and a marker to label each box.

Don’t leave it till the last moment

Packing seems like a very easy task, but don’t make a mistake of leaving it to the last day before moving. Of course, the number of items you have to gather will determine how much time you actually need. But generally, it’s a much better idea to start early and do it well. It’ll let you avoid the stress of rushing and trying to juggle everything at once. After all, you need to do a lot more than just pack before you leave the house for good, so if you have a chance to get something out of the way sooner – take it.

Don’t pack everything at once

If you live in a one-bedroom flat, you won’t need as much time as in case of a big family house. But either way, try to come up with a schedule you’ll be able to follow to get everything done and not forget anything. Don’t just go around the house taking a few things from here and there to put in a box together. It’ll be much more efficient to go about it room by room. Start with the rooms that you won’t really need to use before moving and go to the next one only when all the work is already finished in the previous one.

Secure your things

You’ve spent your hard-earned money to buy the items you own. So you should make sure they don’t get damaged by accident when you’re trying to take them with you to your new house. Prepare different boxes for the most fragile objects and protect them with bubble wrap and foam. And don’t forget about securing your electronics. There’s a chance some of the items will move around during transport, so you should make sure to protect more sensitive elements like screens with suitable materials. Starting your life in a new place can be fun, so don’t let things like packing and transporting ruin the whole experience for you. Take your time and prepare everything to avoid any last-minute surprises. And remember to keep all of the things you’ll need right after moving in one box to avoid wasting your time on looking for them before you finish unpacking.
